DEPARTMENT FOR EDUCATION – Kingston-Upon-Thames

Project Overview

Matthews (Sussex) Limited were contracted by the Department for Education through Jones Lang LaSalle to undertake the demolition of the former 5 storey office building known as Kingstons House.

The project had a number of constraints, tight access and working next to a live Network Rail line. The works included the removal of asbestos materials and then complete soft strip, back to concrete frame. Scaffolding was erected to all elevations, leaving a part of the north west elevation open to allow our high reach demolition excavator to commence
sequential mechanical demolition from the roof down.

We continually liaised with network Rail and the general public throughout the project.  The project programme of 14 weeks was achieved and additional works including utilising our in-house environmental department to undertake soils testing and analysis.

Scope of Works

  • Assume the role of Principle Contractor
  • Establish adequate site welfare facilities
  • Carry out pre-condition survey
  • Internal Soft Strip
  • Asbestos Removal
  • Air quality monitoring
  • Hazardous waste removal
  • Demolish superstructure
  • Demolish and remove substructure
  • Remediate and remove soils contaminated with
asbestos / hydrocarbons and heavy metals
  • Leave site in a clean, tidy and safe condition.

Project Considerations

Working next to a live rail line in an incredibly tight area were all major considerations. Consultations were undertaken with Network Rail, the public and our client throughout the project in order to ensure all parties were affected as little as possible.
